Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has dismissed claims that two Cabinet Secretaries are involved in an alleged drug trafficking scheme amid the government's effort to curb the drug menace in the country.
This follows former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's claims that two CSs in President William Ruto's cabinet wereactively involved in drug networks.
In an interview last October, the former Deputy President accused the government of lacking commitment in tackling drug abuse, arguing that President William Ruto’s alleged appointment of two Cabinet Secretaries linked to drug trafficking demonstrated a failure to take the fight seriously.
"Drug and substance abuse are back in the country. I knew a long time ago that the government was not committed to ending this drug abuse menace in this region," Gachagua stated.
He further claimed that despite the allegations, the President proceeded to appoint two Cabinet Secretaries he accused of involvement in drug trafficking, asserting that this made Kenya unique globally for having what he termed “two drug barons” serving in the Cabinet under William Ruto.
However, CS Murkomen, in response to Gachagua's allegations, refuted the claims, terming them politically motivated and lacking any factual basis.
Speaking on Monday, January 12, during an interview onCitizen TV, Murkomen explained that all CSs underwent rigorous vetting processes before assuming office.
“There is a clear and thorough process of vetting all public servants, including Cabinet Secretaries. If there had been even an iota of proof supporting such allegations, none of us would be holding public office today,” he said.
He argued that Gachagua lacked the moral authority to lecture Kenyans on matters of drug and alcohol abuse, citing Gachagua's poor record during his tenure as the DP.
According to Murkomen, Gachagua’s frequent public rants were an attempt to mask incompetence, alleging that during their time together in Cabinet, the former DP demonstrated little understanding of government operations.
"When it comes to the discussion on drugs and alcohol abuse, the last person who should give us a lecture is the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua because his record is known to be dismal," Murkomen revealed.
"The worst part of him is that I had never seen a more incompetent public servant who understood no single subject in government operations. The reason you see the former Deputy President ranting all the time is that he is trying to cover his incompetence," he added.
During the interview, Murkomen cautioned leaders against making unsubstantiated accusations, warning that such remarks risked undermining public trust in thegovernment and its efforts to fight drug abuse.
